James R. Douglas is the oldest child of Burrell Douglas Sr. and Mary Ann Strickland. He was born in Lowndes County, GA on December 5, 1844. He first shows up on the 1850 Hamilton County, FL census with his father, Burrell and mother Mary and his sister Nancy.

When the family moved back to Georgia they settled in Wayne County, GA and he is on the 1860 census in Wayne County, GA in the Doctortown area. By 1865 his family moved to Ware County, GA where they lived on land lot 443 in the 8th District of Ware County, GA. For some reason James R. Douglas does not appear on the 1870 Ware County, GA census. His whereabouts is unknown at this time. It might have been a mistake by the census taker.

In 1870 his father Burrell was living by Alexander Eunice. James R. Douglas married Emily Jane Eunice, daughter of Alexander Eunice and Emily (last name unknown) circa 1873. And their children were Mary Ann born circa 1876, Viney born circa 1878 and Margaret born circa 1880. He is next appearing on the 1880 Ware County, GA census next to his brother Henry and his family. In 1884 James R. and his brother Henry are the administrators of the father, Burrell's estate. Shortly after their father's death they began selling the land in Ware County, GA known as land lot # 211 in the 8th land district of Ware County, GA.

After selling the land they purchased land in Pierce County, GA (present day Brantley County, GA). James appeared on the 1900 and 1910 Schlatterville, Pierce County, GA James R. lived out the remainder of his days in that area and died circa 1909. He is buried in an unmarked grave in Mt. Plesent Cemetery in Ware County, GA.
