DOUGLASES IN SCOTLAND AND ENGLAND

WILLIAM de DOUGLAS
(ca. 1146 - ca. 1214)

William de Douglas is the first Douglas that shows up in a written record. Other researchers  strongly believed that William de Douglas's father was Theobald le Fleming. Theobald le Fleming's family is said to have come from Flanders when William the Conqueror invaded England in 1066, Theobald's ancestors was actually born in a place called Calais, France, which is in West Flanders. And the rest of Flanders is in the northern part of Belgium. Theobald le Fleming received land in 1147 near the Douglas Waters in Lanarkshire, Scotland. William was heir to his father's land. And being near the Douglas Waters he took the surname of Douglas. William de Douglas's wife, Margaret, is the sister of Freskin who is also from Flanders. He witnessed charters between 1175 and 1213. He was born circa 1146 and was living in Lanarkshire, Scotland and possibly might have been his birthplace. His parents is unknown at this present time. He married Margaret (LNU) and their issues were:

5. Jacobus Douglas b. ca 1500 - d. 1540

The name Jacobus goes way back in the historical Drumlanrig Douglas Clan. Jacobus is another name for James, (possibly after his grandfather). Sir. William Douglas, 6th of Drumlanrig traveled several times across the border into Northumberland, England. In fact he died 9-9-1513 at the Battle of Flodden in Northumberland, England. Also the name Agnes shows up, for instance Sir. William Douglas, 6th of Drumlanrig had a sister named Agnes, also he had a daughter named Agnes and Jacobus's son, named William, had a daughter named Agnes. A lot of the Drumlanrig Douglas Clan were drawn to the Northumberland, England area, which is not far from Halifax, Yorkshire, England where Jacobus Douglas settled and died in. From here the Douglas family started their migration into England.

JACOBUS DOUGLAS
(ca. 1500 - 1540)

Jacobus Douglas was born circa 1500, probably in Drumlanrig, Scotland. His parents were Sir William Douglas, 6th of Drumlanrig and maybe Elizabeth Gordon or maybe another wife of Sir William. Jacobus' wife is unknown at this time. Jacobus according to parish records is the oldest Douglas in Yorkshire, England.  The first and only record found with his name on it is his burial record. He died and was buried January 8, 1540 in Halifax, St. John the Baptist, Yorkshire, England. He had a son named William Douglas (probably named after his grandfather, Sir WilliamDouglas, 6th of Drumlanrig) who was in the same parish in England which proves he is Jacobus' son. William Douglas is the only other male old enough in Halifax, St. John the Baptist, Yorkshire, England to be Jacobus' son. Jacobus probably had other children but they have not been found at this time. Jacobus and his wife had this issue:

1. William Douglas b. circa 1520 d. May 26, 1579

WILLIAM DOUGLAS
(ca. 1520 - 1579)
William Douglas was born circa 1520 in either Northern England or Southern Scotland. His father was Jacobus Douglas and mother name remains unknown. William was living in Halifax, St. John the Baptist, Yorkshire, England when I found a baptism record for his son Jacobus (Jacobi-James) Douglas dated January 10, 1545. William and wife Alice (Maiden name unknown) migrated into Henley On Thames, St. Marys, Oxfordshire, England along with their son Jacobus (Jacobi-James) and daughter Alice. One daughter, Agnes married Jones Smith in Halifax, St. John the Baptist, Yorkshire, England and possibly remained there. William and Ann had the following issues:

Alice the wife of William Douglas died December 3, 1558 in Henley On Thames, St. Mary, Oxfordshire, England. William Douglas died May 26, 1579 in Henley On Thames, St. Mary, Oxfordshire, England.

JACOBI (JAMES) DOUGLAS
(ca. 1545 - 1597)
Jacobi (James) Douglas was born January 10, 1545 in Halifax, St. John the Baptist, Yorkshire, England. On his birth record his name was written Jacobus, after his grandfather. His parents were William Douglas and Alice (maiden name unknown). Jacobi along with his mother, Alice, and father, William, and sister Alice moved to Oxfordshire, England.  Then on April 26, 1567 Jacobi (James) married Ann Tuilo in Henley On Thames, St. Mary, Oxfordshire, England. The marriage record said his name was James. The name Jacobi and Jacobus is another name for James. Jacobi and Ann had the following issues and all the children were born in Henley On Thames, St. Mary, Oxfordshire, England. (his name on their baptism records was written Jacobi)

1. Humphrey Douglas b. Sept. 11, 1569 d. unknown
2. Martha Douglas b. March 18, 1572 d. unknown

6. William Douglas b. Jan. 22, 1580 d. May 21, 1659
7. John Douglas b. Sept. 1, 1583 d. unknown
.
Jacobi (James) Douglas died November 5, 1597 in Henley On Thames, St. Mary, Oxfordshire, England. Having two sons named William was common in England. It was to honor and keep his father's name going. One William Douglas stayed in Henley On Thames, St. Mary, Oxfordshire, England. The other William Douglas migrated into Saint Margaret, Westminster, London, England. Henley and London, England were both located along the Thames River. His brother John Douglas married Christian Dudsbery. There was a Mrs. Christian Douglas who died in Saint Margaret, Westminster, London, England on August 13, 1627. This is the parish in which the 2nd William Douglas resided and was married. William Douglas is the next one in my family tree that I will discuss.

WILLIAM DOUGLAS
(ca. 1580 - 1659)
William Douglas was born January 28, 1580 in Henley On Thames, St. Mary, Oxfordshire, England. His parents were Jacobi (James) Douglas and Anne Tuilo. Shortly after his mother's death in 1604 William Douglas migrated into Saint Margaret, Westminster, London, England. On July 25, 1611 William married Marie Parker, daughter of Nicholas Parker and Grace Huyshe. They had the following issues:

1. Thomas Douglas b. July 25, 1611 d. before 1621
2. Richard Douglas b. May 29, 1614 d. unknown

4. William Douglas b. Dec. 20, 1618 d. unknown
5. James Douglas b. Sept. 13, 1620 d. Nov. 1, 1669
6. Thomas Douglas b. March 11, 1621 d. April 19, 1622

There were 2 son's named James and 2 son's named Thomas. These names were repeated here because they wanted to keep the name going because of the death of a their two young sons. William Douglas died May 21, 1659 and is buried in Saint Margaret, Westminster, London, England. Also in the same parish a Mrs. Christian Douglas was buried on August 13, 1627. His brother, John Douglas married a Christian Dudsbery as I have mention before. This is proof that some of the Douglas family of Henley On Thames, St. Mary, Oxfordshire, England migrated into the Westminster area. The next one in my family tree that I will discuss is James Douglas.

JAMES DOUGLAS
(ca. 1620 - 1669)
James Douglas was born September 13, 1620 in Saint Margaret, Westminster, London, England. His parents were William Douglas and Marie Parker. James Douglas married Welzebertus Brown on May 8, 1642 in Saint Margaret, Westminster, London, England. They had the following issues:

James Douglas died November 1, 1669 and is buried in Saint Margaret, Westminster, London, England. The next one in my family tree that I will talk about is the Immigrant, John Douglas who was transported to Virginia in about 1660.
